ZDNet is reporting that Avast Antivirus has found a strain of Windows Malware that, besides mining cryptocurrency, also launches attacks against the popular Content Management System (CMS) WordPress that runs a very significant portion of the internet’s websites. Reportedly, there are 75,000,000 websites running wordpress making this CMS the perfect target for sweeping hacks against popular vulnerabilities in older versions.
It’s important to remember that malware doesn’t always just set your computer on fire (okay, almost never). Malware can eat up your computing resources mining cryptocurrency for immediate profits, attacking websites, reading your conversations, listening for your personal information, influencing your opinions through “malvertising”, and many other dangerous goals.
We’ve even seen malware remove other malware from your machine in efforts to gain as much of your computers computing power as possible! This method of “rogue-cleanup” is quite popular in malware that uses up your resources. This can lul you into a false sense of security, as it appears as though your computer is running fine while you’re actively using it (the malware goes dormant). While it spends its off hours as a rogue agent sent from Russia!
If you’re concerned that your computer is a secret agent, or are just interested in making sure your everyday computing is safe and secure, send us a message, or comment below! We’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic!
